Phish. Rebirth Brass Band. Eric Clapton. Santana. Cowboy mouth. Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Imagine listening to these and other amazing bands while drinking a beer, eating Crawfish Monica and sitting in the sun with all of you friends or family. That’s the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival. Two weekends of beautiful weather, good music and even better food.
This weekend, April 24th, 25th, 26th and 27th, and next weekend, May 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th, the Jazz Fest will take place at the racetrack in New Orleans. Hundreds of bands from all over, including the diverse group mentioned above, will take center stage and perform for crowds that reach numbers in the thousands.
Being from New Orleans, I have attended Jazz Fest practically every year for my whole life. The environment of the festival so easily puts me into a great mood. Upon arrival I hit the food first. Sharing is the way to go because that way you can eat so many more dishes. Crawfish Monica and crawfish bread are must haves. A Couchon de Lait po-boy from Love at First Bite is also a favorite of mine, and from the looks of the line, everyone else’s as well. A mango freeze is next for the first time of the day. Yes, I said first time because it’s so yummy that I usually find myself there a few times.
Staking out your spot is important. Finding a place big enough, however, might be a little tough because there are so many people everywhere. There isn’t much shade, so stationing near a booth or tent is smart. I’m not one of those people that sits at one stage all day though. I like to stand somewhere usually off to one side but near the front for a little while before switching stages. I need to make my rounds so I can see all the shows that I want to. However if Better Than Ezra, a band from New Orleans, is playing, which they typically do every other year, I station myself bright and early.
Jazz Fest days are full of laughter, music, food, friends, family, sunshine, and so much happiness. When on the grounds, everything is good. Everyone is happy. It seems as though nothing can go wrong.
For locals and out-of-towners alike, it is a time to let loose and be free. It is a time to forget about that test or meeting at work to do what makes you happy.
So, if you have nothing to do make your way down to the Big Easy and make memories that will last a lifetime.
